How We Work

Friends' approach is based on the idea that it is the responsibility of the adults to stop bullying.

We work with a “whole organization approach”, which means that all staff and management, as well as children and youth and their parents are involved. Friends provides knowledge and tools so that those working with children and young people are better equipped to work against bullying, harassment and acts of intimidation. Often, it’s about increasing knowledge about how and why bullying occurs, as well as how to prevent it. A norm-critical approach permeates all our training courses.

Friends Colorado has several different training courses offered to schools and youth sports clubs. All courses are based on current research, and our long-term collaboration always starts with a survey of the climate in the school/sports club. We do this because every situation is unique and every school/club has different needs for working to prevent bullying.

Our methods are based on research and on average bullying decreases with 24% already after one year at schools that work with the Friends Program. This is how we know that Friends’ approach works.

For each school/sports club participating in the Friends Program, the relationship with Friends begins with a survey where students/athletes and staff answer questions about the atmosphere at the school. In the survey, students/athletes and staff answer questions about bullying and acts of intimidation. The aim of the survey is to determine the school’s needs and conditions for preventative work to combat acts of intimidation.

  • The same survey with the same questions is repeated each year, making it possible to compare the situation before and after the school/club started working with Friends.
  • After a year working with The Friends Program, bullying (repeated harassment) decreases on average by 24 percent.
  • Individual acts of harassment decrease on average by 14 percent.
  • Surveys from responsible school management teams that Friends have worked with also show that nine out of ten schools feel that the atmosphere has improved since beginning to work with Friends.
  • In the Swedish project “Safe Sport”, almost nine out of ten clubs feel that working with Friends has improved the social atmosphere in the club.
  • All clubs that have answered Friends’ evaluation questionnaires experience that they have increased knowledge and awareness on how to work to prevent bullying.
  • A little more than nine out of ten clubs have developed a policy to work with urgent situations and bullying prevention.
